Book Description

A single lady in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a suitor
Margaret de Lacey has accepted her unmarried state with dignity, if not delight. She had no suitors when she was young and starry-eyed, though regrettably poor, and it's unlikely any man will court her now that she's older, wiser, and still just as penniless. Until, that is, her brother unexpectedly inherits the dukedom of Durham and settles an enormous dowry on her, making her the most eligible heiress in town.
No gentleman in London is more in need of a wealthy bride than Rhys Corwen, Earl of Dowling. He contrives an introduction to Margaret because of her dowry, but she swiftly sets him right: no fortune hunter will win her heart or her hand. Far from put off, Rhys is intrigued. Interested. Entranced. And soon the only thing he needs more than Margaret's fortune . . . is her love.

About the Author

Caroline Linden knew from an early age she was a reader, but not a writer. Despite an addiction to Trixie Belden and Nancy Drew, she studied physics and dreamed of being an astronaut. She earned a math degree from Harvard College and then wrote software for a financial services firm, all the while reading everything in sight but especially romance. Only after she had children, and found herself with only picture books to read, did she begin to make up a story of her own. To her immense surprise, it turned out to be an entire novel—and it was much more fun than writing computer code. Now the author of seven books, she lives with her family in New England.

Organic Chemistry, 4th Edition

Language: English

ISBN-13: 978-0393931495
File Size : 13.4 Mb | File Format : PDF
Book Description

Organic Chemistry helps students understand the structure of organic molecules by helping them understand the how and why of organic chemistry.

Organic Chemistry, Fourth Edition, was written to students by two expert teachers, with an emphasis on understanding, not memorization. The authors employ a conversational writing style that is instructive and interesting to read.

Jones and Fleming take the time to not only explain the basics but also coach students through the tough parts of the subject. They do this by pointing out common mistakes that students make and providing expert advice on solving problems.

Whether a student reads the book from beginning to end, or uses the text as a reference, the authors have developed innovative pedagogy to meet their needs, and an art and media program to help students visualize each process.

Review

I am very, very pleased with the format, content, and perspective this text offers. Thank you for the high quality of the book. -- Eric J. Sorin, student, Victor Valley College

I have started teaching the course and am extremely happy with Organic Chemistry. It is so pedagogical and so well put together! I think you have a winner with this one. I wouldn't be surprised if it becomes "the" organic chemistry text in colleges around the country in the near future. Word of mouth will help and I'm all for it. -- Gerald Hammond, University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth

I like this book! The writing is the clearest and most readable I've encountered. The illustrations leap off the page. It is very well done! -- Randy Robinson, Luther College

I would like you to know that I find Organic Chemistry to be very easy to read and understand. This may not sound like a lot, but it is. Many texts are worded for the professors instead of the students and that is not much help for those of us who are trying to grasp concepts that are quite difficult. -- Sherry Carder, student, Glenville State College

Jones's conversational tone and evident! Good humor are well-suited to his aim of reducing organic chemistry to rational and recognizable patterns, all founded on a purely qualitative approach to molecular orbital interactions. Students are quickly led to a level of mechanistic analysis not found in other introductory texts. -- Bart Kahr, University of Washington

Maitland Jones's Organic Chemistry is an excellent text. It has a superb focus, a fresh approach, and an easy readability that would make it worthy of consideration by any organic instructor. -- Michael S. Holden, Dickinson College, Journal of Chemical Education, March 1998

Maitland Jones's Organic Chemistry is written in plain English, which makes it easy to understand. Its mechanistic approach is unprecedented and ought to eliminate rote memorization. -- Cosmos O. Okoro, University of Arkansas

Organic Chemistry is an absolute joy to use. Sometimes I find myself reading it just for the fun of it, and the students can't say enough good things about it. . . . Maitland Jones's special talent for selecting the topics, and most important, the right words and illustrations, make the whole text just dazzling in every respect. -- James D. Morrison, University of New Hampshire

The coverage is excellent and I particularly like the way the author sets up arguments rather than just stating facts. The discussion of hydroboration typifies this very successful approach. -- J. M. Percy, University of Birmingham

[Organic Chemistry] is the most exciting undergraduate organic textbook I have seen during my 25 years of teaching organic. I had on occasion given some thought to writing a textbook for undergraduates . . .. Your own book comes closest to what I would have liked to write, and more. -- Moses K. Kaloustian, Fordham University --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

About the Author

Maitland Jones, Jr. is Professor of Chemistry at New York University. His undergraduate and graduate degrees are from Yale University. A long-time teacher of the organic chemistry course at Princeton, he is also an internationally recognized research scientist. His field of expertise is reactive intermediates, extremely short-lived molecules that exist only momentarily in the course of a chemical reaction. Within that subfield, Professor Jones is particularly interested in carbenes, carbon atoms with only two of their bond-forming electrons linked to other atoms, instead of the usual four. He is considered one of the world’s leading authorities on this subject and travels widely, lecturing on his research.

Math Wars: A Guide for Parents and Teachers

Book Description

This book is written for parents and other interested parties so that they can understand the great debate taking place in many states in this country about how to teach basic math. The debate centers around the standards written by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), which call for a radically different approach to mathematics education. Because the issues are so heated between the NCTM-oriented curricula and traditional curricula (the curricula that NCTM-oriented replaced), the term Math Wars was coined to describe them.

Parents are concerned about their children's math learning. Teachers are concerned about math teaching. When parents see what children are bringing home under the new curriculum, it is clear that their children are not working on the same mathematics that parents remember from the time when they were in school. But, the problem goes beyond grades K-12. Post-secondary mathematics courses are the fear of many students. The standards created by the NCTM do not necessarily prepare students for success, either on SATs or in college.

Besides lack of knowledge about mathematics education, many parents have an additional problem in that they feel they lack knowledge in mathematics itself. This is very intimidating; thus it is difficult for parents to do anything about the confusing state of mathematics education. This book provides some answers.

Spend Less and See More in New York City: Are You Ready to Travel Smart?

If you'd like to get the most out of your dollar and your trip, this is the guide for you. I put a fresh spin on budget travel, showing you how to see the best for less and how to see it in a more authentic way-the way the locals do.

Instead of spending $300 a night for a chain hotel, why not live it up in an antiques-filled Fifth Avenue mansion for just $75, or bed down in a SoHo gallery just steps from the artwork for $110?

Or how about enjoying falafel at Alfanoose for just $5, so you can splurge on up-and-coming chef Abdhul Traore's steak frites dusted with African herbs at Les Enfants Terribles?

Let me show you the "other" New York City-the one only insiders know about. Take a one-day cooking class with the city's top chefs or get free tango lessons at the Argentine Consulate. These are only a few of the great ways to get closer to the culture of New York City. Read on for more!

Review

"Not going on vacation this year? Give your child an outdoors experience by looking for this, or any of the Adventures with the Parkers books.
Author Mike Graf is a self-professed "national park fanatic" who spends his time exploring our country's parks. Because of his first-hand knowledge, his series are filled with true-life facts, authentic history, places you can really visit and photographs, all wrapped within a story that kids can relate to.

If you happen to be going to Great Smoky Mountains National Park this summer, this book will thrill your 7-to-11-year-old. If you're going elsewhere or not going at all, grab it anyhow and hand it to your adventuresome kid. "Ridge Runner Rescue" is so much fun, it will have your child parked in one spot for hours." --Savannah Morning News, April 2009

"You seriously need every one of these series in your library, no matter which national park you are near." --School Library Journal, June 2009 --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Book Description

Praise for Scott Meyers’ first book, Effective C++:
“I heartily recommend Effective C++ to anyone who aspires to mastery of C++ at the intermediate level or above.”
– The C/C++ User’s Journal
From the author of the indispensable Effective C++, here are 35 new ways to improve your programs and designs. Drawing on years of experience, Meyers explains how to write software that is more effective: more efficient, more robust, more consistent, more portable, and more reusable. In short, how to write C++ software that’s just plain better.
More Effective C++ includes:
  • Proven methods for improving program efficiency, including incisive examinations of the time/space costs of C++ language features
  • Comprehensive descriptions of advanced techniques used by C++ experts, including placement new, virtual constructors, smart pointers, reference counting, proxy classes, and double-dispatching
  • Examples of the profound impact of exception handling on the structure and behavior of C++ classes and functions
  • Practical treatments of new language features, including bool, mutable, explicit, namespaces, member templates, the Standard Template Library, and more. If your compilers don’t yet support these features, Meyers shows you how to get the job done without them.
More Effective C++ is filled with pragmatic, down-to-earth advice you’ll use every day. Like Effective C++ before it, More Effective C++ is essential reading for anyone working with C++.

Book Description

When author Andrea Nguyen's family was airlifted out of Saigon in 1975, one of the few belongings that her mother hurriedly packed for the journey was her small orange notebook of recipes. Thirty years later, Nguyen has written her own intimate collection of recipes, INTO THE VIETNAMESE KITCHEN, an ambitious debut cookbook that chronicles the food traditions of her native country. Robustly flavored yet delicate, sophisticated yet simple, the recipes include steamy pho noodle soups infused with the aromas of fresh herbs and lime; rich clay-pot preparations of catfish, chicken, and pork; classic bánh mì sandwiches; and an array of Vietnamese charcuterie. Nguyen helps readers shop for essential ingredients, master core cooking techniques, and prepare and serve satisfying meals, whether for two on a weeknight or 12 on a weekend.Reviews

“Andrea Nguyen may be to Vietnamese food what Julia Child was to French fare and Barbara Tropp to Chinese cuisine.”—Chicago Tribune“Best for: Anyone who wants to fall in love—truly, madly, deeply—with Vietnamese food.”—San Jose Mercury News“[A] smart, soulful collection of Vietnamese recipes.”—Saveur“A comprehensive take on a delicate yet dynamic cuisine.”—Philadelphia Inquirer“No other author has presented such a detailed account of the culinary abilities of Vietnamese home cooks, and subjects like the role of pickled vegetables and the techniques of charcuterie have never been so clearly explained for a wide audience.”—New York Times"Only now is Vietnamese food culture getting the attention it deserves, and a book of this beauty and seriousness will do much to explain the origins, traditions, and refinement of the country's cuisine.”—John Mariani's Virtual Gourmet“Nguyen makes Vietnamese cuisine accessible with this extensive cookbook, which stretches from soup to charcuterie.”—Houston Chronicle“An impressive, carefully researched, and thoroughly readable guide to Vietnamese food and culinary tradition.”—Library Journal
